Short Writing Assignments (SWA)

Commentary

SWA #1 prepared me for future writing pieces I create, by allowing me to truly see and comprehend how not only my tone but also writing voice shifts based on the audience I am speaking to. I was able to express the same message to three different people, but the professionalism and tone completely changed throughout. After this assignment, I started to take note of these patterns in other situations in which I am writing. This prepared me for my literacy narrative because it made me acknowledge many other patterns people have in their writing. In the major essay I dove into these details and how I started to evolve as a writer.

SWA #2 helped my comparison skills as I analyzed "Is Google Making us Stupid" by Nicholas Carr and "Reading in a Digital Age" by Naomi Baron. I compared the use of rhetoric in each passage, reflected on the importance of asking questions while reading, and explained the way both authors differently throw light on the idea that technology is changing the way people process information we read. This taught me a new perspective of comprehension when looking at articles that I can use in the future. This was a useful skill to practice in preparation for my comparative analysis essay where I set five contrasting sources side by side. This essay went further in depth than the SWA, however, planning out the SWA and the essay were similar, and this was very helpful.
